Methodology

Understanding a situation takes more than finding information.

Trailon was designed to preserve the differences between source, context, relationship, and interpretation—and to keep a reading linked to the path that made it possible.

I · UNDERSTANDING

A situation does not fit in a file.

We begin with how people make sense of things: bringing elements, time, and relationships into a coherent account of what is happening.

01The mind does not read files

Our minds construct situations.

Relational memory, situation models, event segmentation, and cognitive maps describe parts of the same phenomenon: to understand, we bring separate elements into an account of what is happening.

In plain language. Put simply, we remember a detail better when we know who was there, what came before, and what changed afterward.

Trailon does not try to imitate the brain. It starts from a simpler observation: understanding depends on relationships and context, not only retrieving isolated items.
02Externalize the path

We learned to externalize memory. We still externalize context poorly.

Writing, maps, calendars, databases, and search are forms of cognitive offloading: we move outside our heads what we need not hold alone. Usually, though, we externalize items better than paths between them.

In plain language. A file keeps the message. It rarely keeps why that message made another document matter three months later.

Files externalize points; Trailon also tries to externalize part of the path between them.
03Persistent situation

An answer starts with a question. A situation does not.

In a temporary flow, each question retrieves material, assembles context, and produces an answer. In a Landscape, the structured situation persists, receives revisions, and can be explored through different questions.

In plain language. The second question should not need to reconstruct everything the first already helped organize.

An LLM can operate on the situation. It need not be the situation.
II · DISCIPLINE

Connecting requires preserving differences.

As more material comes together, it becomes more important to distinguish what came from a source, what was structured, and what remains a reviewable reading.

04Origin is not interpretation

What was said, what happened, and what we interpret are not the same thing.

A source contains material. An excerpt preserves something literal and locatable. An account attributes a claim to someone. An occurrence organizes something that may have happened. Contexts and interpretations connect these elements under human review.

In plain language. “Can release it today” is a statement in a source. “There was an improper payment” is already a conclusion requiring other support.

The architecture preserves the difference between material, record, and reading.
05Relationship is not causation

Connecting two points does not decide what lies between them.

Co-occurrence, proximity in time, support, contradiction, and graph paths are different relationships. They may guide an investigation without automatically establishing a link, intent, or cause.

In plain language. Two people appearing near each other in a graph is an invitation to look, not a verdict about them.

The Constellation guides. It does not judge.
06Inference is not evidence

A conclusion can emerge from relationships without becoming a source.

Integration and synthesis allow a reading to emerge from several supports. That reading can be useful and strong without acquiring the epistemic status of a document, literal excerpt, or confirmed event.

In plain language. A convincing sentence remains an interpretation if no material contains it literally.

Fluency does not turn interpretation into fact.
III · SUPPORT AND CONTINUITY

Understanding also means being able to return.

Pointing to an origin is not enough. A reliable reading preserves the path that made that origin relevant and the history of revisions made upon it.

07Supporting path

Where it came from is only half the question.

Verification support answers where the material is. Understanding support preserves why that excerpt mattered in that episode, in which record, and under which reading.

In plain language. Opening the right PDF is not enough. We need the excerpt and the path connecting it to the claim.

Support is origin plus path.
08Continuity

The current state should not erase the earlier path.

A new source may support, contradict, or reformulate a reading. Hypotheses can be rejected, relationships changed, and accounts revised without pretending today’s knowledge was always available.

In plain language. Changing your mind when a new source arrives is part of the work. Erasing the fact that the change happened should not be.

Trailon need not pretend it always knew what it knows now.
09AI philosophy

Use models where interpretation adds value, not where stable structure suffices.

Trailon favors deterministic rules near the source, statistical methods and embeddings when measuring similarity, heuristics when criteria must be explicit, ambiguous candidates for review, and LLMs where language and interpretation are needed.

In plain language. Not every problem improves when AI writes an answer. Sometimes the best behavior is preserving an identifier, date, or hash exactly.

The closer to the origin, the stricter the rules. The closer to synthesis, the more explicit the limits.
IV · EXPLORATION AND TRANSFER

A situation must outlast the person who understood it first.

The Landscape remains live for exploration. bruce helps navigate it. A dossier makes a reading portable without breaking the path back to the material.

10bruce

Intelligence that explores a situation without having to be its memory.

bruce can retrieve, compare, synthesize, and help a person explore the Landscape. It operates on a persistent situation whose objects and paths exist beyond any one answer.

In plain language. bruce is the operator helping navigation. The landscape does not disappear when the conversation ends.

bruce explores the Landscape. bruce is not the Landscape.
11Transfer understanding

Understanding is not the same as explaining.

The curse of knowledge makes someone who already understands skip essential premises. Compression can also remove the very context another person needs to reconstruct meaning.

In plain language. Stating the conclusion is quick. Transferring why it makes sense requires preserving part of the path.

A situation should not depend on the memory of the person who understood it first.
12Dossier

A good synthesis shortens the text, not the path.

A dossier organizes episodes, quotations, contradictions, limits, and references into a portable reading. It can be delivered and revisited without replacing the live Landscape on which it was built.

In plain language. A Landscape is a situation in motion. A dossier is a reading that can travel.

A dossier transfers understanding, not just a conclusion.
A product discipline

AI without an oracle. Relationships without verdicts. Synthesis without losing origin.

This combination lets Trailon be sophisticated without asking trust to replace verification.
